Brazil’s National Council for Food Security and Nutrition (CONSEA) and Institute for Agriculture & Trade Policy (IATP) hosted “Workshop and Dialogue on Global Food Governance Reforms” in Brasília, Brazil (29-30 April 2026). Julie Kim (GPF) participated to share perspectives from the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, along with insights from observing ongoing UN80 Initiative discussions.
The discussions examined the current global contexts, ranging from the imminent climate and biodiversity loss crises to numerous conflicts and financial constraints many countries – particularly in the Global South – are facing, and their impacts on multilateralism and global governance. These elements were then connected to the numerous UN negotiations and reform processes, especially related to food systems space at the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Julie (GPF) participated on the panel examining the broader multilateral context, responding to the following questions:
1. In this context, which are the major gaps and challenges in global food governance and how can they be addressed?
2. Which are the revision and reform processes under way within the United Nations with relevance to global food governance, and how are they evolving in the current geopolitical context? Which are the opportunities to strengthen social participation, democratisation and representativeness in these processes?
Fellow panelists included a Brazilian government official, CSO actor working in Geneva, a UN University professor and the UN Special Rapporteur on Food.
